교육목표

영어영문학과에서는 영미문학과 영어학의 전문화된 과목들을 통하여 고급의 영어구사능력과 영미문화에 대한 숙달된 식견을 갖춘 학생을 배양시키는 것을 교육 목표로 하고 있다. 이를 위하여 영미문학, 영어학, 실용영어 등에 교육과정을 고르게 비중을 둔다. 또한 학생들의 영어구사력 향상을 위해서 미국인 교수가 직접 강의하는 수업을 제공한다. 영어영문학과에서는 현재까지 문학, 어학, 실용영어 이상 세 분야를 중심으로 강의해 왔으나 실용성이 더욱 요구되는 학문적 추세에 맞추어 통·번역과목의 신설로 학생들이 통·번역에 대한 기본지식을 탐색하는 기회를 주고 영어스피치의 신설로 스피치를 강화한다.전공을 통해 배운 지식과 지혜가 실생활에 연결되도록 연례행사로써 학생들이 주관하는 어연극을 상연하고 있다. 졸업생들은 영어능력을 필요로 하는 무역계, 금융계, 관광계, 정부산하단체 등 여러 기업체에 진출, 활동하고 있으며, 중고등학교 교사 및 대학원 진학을 하여 연구활동을 하고 있다

 

 

1학년 1학기 영문법(023106) - (계열선수) 전통적인 영어 문법을 실용적인 목적을 위하여 익히는 과정으로, 영어를 전공하는 학생으로서 영어로 된 전공서적을 읽기 위하여 꼭 필요한 과정임. 강의내용은 영어 문법을 전반적으로 다루지만, 특히 영어 읽기를 위하여 필요한 부분을 강조함.

영어영문학입문(1)(201105) - (전공선택) --영문학을 전공하는 학생들이 반드시 알아야 할 영국문학사와 미국문학사를 다루면서, 영국과 미국의 주요 작가들의 작품뿐만 아니라 두 나라의 역사와 전통, 문화를 접하는 기회를 제공한다. --각 시대별 문학의 특징을 학습하고 주요 작가들의 작품을 선별하여 읽는다. 이 경우에, 영문학 작품과 영어원서, 혹은 각종 시험에 자주 나오는 어휘와 구문을 아울러 학습함으로써 독해실력과 어휘실력을 향상시키도록 한다. --작품에 대한 철저한 예습이 요구되며, 수업시간에 활발히 참여하도록 한다.

영미단편소설(201106) - (전공선택) 이 과목은 비교적 짧고 단시간 내에 읽을 수 있는 단편문학의 세계를 경험함으로써 문학 일반에 대한 관심과 흥미를 유발하고 아울러 문학의 기본 속성과 본질을 깨우치도록 하기위해서 개설되었다. 즉 문학은 인간의 삶에 뿌리 밖고 있으며, 우리가 살아가면서 부딪치는 구체적인 문제들을 다루고 그 대안을 모색하려는 시도라는 것, 또한 문학은 인간의 본성에 대한 연구인 동시에 인간은 그가 살고 있는 시간적, 공간적 상황 즉 역사와 사회의 산물이라는 것도 가르쳐 주는 것이다. 단편 문학은 독자로 하여금 그러한 깨달음에 도달하도록 하기 위해 어떤 '인식의 충격'(shock of recognition)이나 '각성의 계기'(moment of illumination)의 순간을 그 안에 갖고 있다. 이 과목은 단편문학의 이러한 속성을 이해하도록 하기 위해 영미 뿐만 아니라 다른 서구의 단편들도 되도록 폭넓게 다룰 것이다. 이하에 예시한 강의 진도 내용은 하나의 샘플이며 구체적인 작품의 목록은 강의를 진행하며 자유로이 변경, 가감될 것이다.

영어커뮤니케이션1(201108) - (전공선택) This course is for high-beginner to low-intermediate students of English. Students will practise the four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing while exploring various topics in the textbook. the main goal of the course is to improve students' English communication skills in a fun, professional, and useful manner. Instruction will , therefore, include a variety of teaching methods which reinforce the four language skills. For evaluation, students will complete two writing and two speaking assignments and a mid-term and final exam which will include a reading, writing, and listening component. Students are expected to prepare for class by completing their homework and reading any assigned materials before class. If you participate in all class activities, you will be a better communicator in English.

1학년 2학기 통번역입문(201206) - (전공선택) 통역과 번역에 관한 기초 이론 습득과 더불어 통번역사의 기본적인 자질 (A언어, B언어 구사력, 분석 능력, 발표, 배경 지식 등)을 함양하기 위한 입문 과목임

영어영문학입문(2)(201203) - (전공선택) 영어영문학 과목 중에서 어학적인 면에 근거를 두고 어학에 대한 흥미와 이해를 돕 기 위해서 계획된 과목으로 언어 전반에 대한 지식을 얻도록 하는데 목적이 있습니다.

영문학사(19세기이후)(023206) - (계열선수) 이 과목은 19세기초 낭만주의 문학부터 19세기 중엽의 사실중의 및 사회적 담론들 그리고 20세기 모더니즘 문학까지의 영문학의 흐름과 사조를 개관하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 문학작품뿐만 아니라 그 배경이 되는 사회역사적 상황 특히 19세기 빅토리아조의 중심적 정신적 상황(spiritual climate) 그리고 20세기 정신의 특징인 과거의 전통과의 단절 및 계승의 문제등을 중점적으로 고찰한다. 그 키워드들은 "계급" 및 "계급의식"(class consciousness) 그리고 "근대성"(modernity) 및 "근대성의 경험"등이 돨 것이다. 항상 문학은 당대 사회와 역사의 산물인 동시에 그것들을 뛰어 넘는 유토피아의 지향과 추구라는 문학의 본성을 일깨우게 될 것이다.

시사영어(201205) - (전공선택) 지금까지 영어를 제한된 어휘만을 포함한, 제한된 소재에 관한 글만을 접함으로서 경험하지 못한 영어권의 문화, 과학, 사회 전반에 관하여 이해할 수 있는 기회를 갖고, 또한 이러한 글들을 읽음으로써 다양한 분야의 어휘를 익히고, 또한 시사성 있는 글들의 독특한 문체로 인하여 생기는 어려움을 극복하는 훈련을 하고자 한다. 그리고, 궁극적으로는 문장구조를 파악하는 (무의식적인) 능력을 키움으로써 좀더 내용에 주의를 집중할 수 있도록 훈련을 한다.

2학년 1학기 영미문학작가론(201311) - (전공선택) 이 강좌는 빅토리아조 소설의 포문을 연 대작가 Jane Austen과 빅트리아조의 마지막을 장식하며 현대영소설의 형식과 내용을 완성한 Henry James의 소설을 읽어가면서 영소설사의 획기적 장을 마련한 두 작가를 탐구한다. 두 작가의 대표적 소설 Pride and Prejudice, The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors 등을 정독하고 두 작가의 생애와 문학 세계를 고찰하는 동시에 공통점과 차이점 등을 알아본다.

통번역연습(201413) - (전공선택) 통역과 번역에 관한 기본 이론을 바탕으로 실제 통역 및 번역을 위한 기초를 쌓는 과정입니다. 통역자료는 매주 학생들이 순번으로 준비하며, 번역자료는 수업 1주 전 미리 나눠준 자료를 번역하여 수업 시간에 학생별로 발표하는 방식으로 진행됩니다. 더불어 주제별 용어 정리 및 전문 용어 습득에 필요한 연습을 하게 됩니다.

영어학개론(201306) - (전공선택) The purpose of this course is to offer an overview of the science of language to students who have little background in the field of linguistics. For the first half of this course, we will be discussing theoretical issues and major findings in English linguistics. Specifically, we will introduce general principles in morphology, phonology, syntax, and semantics, formulated by linguists in order to explain linguistic phenomena and characterize our unconscious linguistic knowledge. The second half of the course will mostly deal with issues in applied linguistics with a focus on, but not limited to, language acquisition/teaching and sociolinguistics.

영어음성학(023303) - (계열선수) In this course we are going to study what phonetics is, focussing on American English and how to correctly pronounce English segments with appropriate phonetic knowledge.

영문학사(19세기이전)(023304) - (계열선수) Old English시기의 Beowulf로 부터 18세기 신고전주의 시대까지의 영문학의 흐름을 영국의 역사, 사회, 문화등의 흐름과 연관하여 개관하며 각 시대별로 주요작가의 시, 산문을 선택하여 close reading하게 된다. 작품에 대한 이해를 묻는 질문을 배당하여 학생들로 하여금

고급영문강독(1)(201309) - (전공선택) 이 과목은 대학생 이라면 마땅히 갖춰야 할 기초적인 인문학적 소양과 바탕을 함양하도록 하기 위해 철학, 역사, 종교, 사회등에 관해 쓰여진 저명한 영미 저술가들의 대표적 에세이를 읽는 것을 목적으로 한다. 고급의 세련된 영어로 쓰여지되, 내용은 평이하면서도 우리의 사고를 자극하는 도발적인 글들을 읽을 것이며, 명석하고 치밀한 논리를 전개하고 있는 글쓰기에도 아울러 유념하면서 읽을 것이다.

2학년 2학기 미국문학사(023404) - (계열선수) This course is a survey of American literature from its Puritan origins. We will think in particular about four issues: 1) the relation between literature and nationalism; 2) the various ways in which American authors have defined and/or justified their art; 3) the ways in which American authors have gone about creating a particular vision of the nation’s past; and 4) the ways in which American “originality” might be seen in literary form as well as in (or perhaps rather than) its content or subject matter. While surveying a broad range of texts in different genres, we will also continue to ask: what makes this body of literature “American”? How has the idea of “America” changed over time? In what ways do racial and gender differences inflect the meanings of “America”?

영미시의이해(201411) - (전공선택) 이 과목에서 우리는 영미시를 어떻게 읽을 것인가라는 질문에 충실하게 대답하려고 노력한다. 영미시는 독특한 존재양식을 지니고 있다. 이것을 제대로 이해하기 위해서 우리는 이 과목에서 영미시의 기본 구조를 익히고 나아가 그것의 발전과정을 살펴본다. 이를테면 영미시

영미문학배경(201404) - (전공선택) 이 강좌에서 우리는 영미문학배경과 관련된 역사, 철학, 문화 등 다양한 주제들을 점검할 것이다. 문학 텍스트를 다루는 것은 물론이다. 단, 이번 학기에는 시청각 자료에 실려있는 자료를 대부분 텍스트로 이용할 것이다. 월요일 2시간은 DVD 등 영화를 보고 목요일 1시간은 이에 대한 발표와 토론을 할 것이다. 수업시간에 다룰 영상작품 목록에 관해서는 학생들의 의견을 참고해서 구체화할 것이다.

고급영문강독(2)(201408) - (전공선택) 이 강좌는 영어로 된 다양한 종류의 글들을 읽는데 어려움이 없도록 reading skills을 함양하는 데 목표가 있다. reading skills을 얻기 위한 전략으로 다양한 sentence structures를 훈련하여 활용 가능하게 한다. 영문 에세이나 단편 소설, 그리고 The Times지나 Newsweek지의 시사성 있는 기사를 읽어가면서 읽기 능력을 배양하고 영어권 문화에 대한 이해도 병행한다.

영어커뮤니케이션 2(201414) - (전공선택) This course is for low- to mid-intermediate students of English. Students will practice the four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing while exploring various topics. The main goal of the course is to improve students’ English communication skills. Students are expected to prepare for class by completing their homework and thoroughly reading any assigned materials before class. Instruction will include a variety of teaching methods that include the four language skills. For evaluation, students will complete 2 writing and 2 speaking assignments and a midterm and final exam that require speaking, reading, listening and writing. By the end of the course, the students should have made good progress in becoming better communicators in English by gaining a lot of valuable practice through the various speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities in the class.

3학년 1학기 영미희곡(201503) - (전공선택) 이 수업은 20세기 전반에 등장한 현대연극의 대표작들을 다룬다. 현대 영미 연극은 유럽에서 진행된 극적실험들과 밀접한 연관관계를 갖기에, 이를 이해하기 위해선 단순히 영미권 작가들의 작품들을 다루는 것만으로는 충분치 않다. 이 수업은 현대 영미 연극의 대표작들과 더불어, 영미 연극에 직접적인 영향을 끼친 유럽 작가들의 작품을 함께 살펴봄으로써, 현대 연극을 구성하는 기본적인 문제 의식과 구조적 특성들을 분석하고자 한다.

미국문학특강(201507) - (전공선택) 이 과목에서 우리는 최근 발간된 몇몇 유명한 소설과 전통적인 고전시 몇 편을 읽을 것이다. 특히 문제작인 The Kite Runner와 The Alchemist를 읽음으로써 삶의 의미에 대한 고뇌에 찬 탐색을 시도한다. 자아와 세게, 문학과 역사, 자연과 문명 등 다양한 주제를 다룰 것이다. 이들 소설이 쉬운 영어로 쓰여졌기에 쉬운 글읽기를 통한 깊은 의미 파악이라는 과정을 밟을 것이다. 아울러, 전형적인 고전시 몇 편을 읽음으로써 미국문학에 대한 이해를 넓힌다.

영문학특강(201506) - (전공선택) 금년의 "영문학 특강"은 그 고명한 이름만 들었을 뿐 평생을 읽지 않고 살아갈 것이 분명한 서양 소설문학의 전성기에 씌여진 대가들의 걸작소설 대여섯 권을 읽는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 과목은 서양문학 전공자들이 마땅히 갖춰야 할 문학일반에 대한 이해와 소양뿐 아니라 해당시기의 역사, 사회에 대한 지식과 정보도 습득하고, 동시에 인문학의 근본바탕인 인간과 세계에 대한 탐구와 모색의 기회가 될 것이며. 나아가 소설읽기의 진정한 즐거움과 성취감을 맛보고 경험하는 계기를 제공할 것이다. 19세기 서구 걸작 소설들이 한결같이 희랍비극에서 시작되어 르네상스 시기의 비극(셰익스피어)을 거쳐 유구히 계승전수된 서양비극문학의 전통을 이어온다는 점에 주목하여, 과목의 핵심적 화두와 키워드는 '비극적 비전(Tragic Vision)이란 무엇인가'에 맞춰질 것이다. 서구인들의 중심적 인간관 및 세계관으로서 비극적 비전이 19세기 명작소설들에서 어떻게 재현되고 또 변형되었는가의 문제들이 검토될 것이다. 모든 교재는 우리말 번역본으로 읽을 것이며, 따라서 수강희망자들이 염두에 둬야할 것은 영어독해실력 함양에 주목적이 있는 학생들에게 이 과목은 거의 도움이 되지 않을 것이란 점이다(셰익스피어의 "맥베스"만 영어교재이고 이것도 현대역 영어본임) 우리말 번역본은 담당교수가 국내에 출판된 판본들 중에서 엄밀하게 비교 검토하여 가장 원작을 충실히 옮기고 아울러 우리말을 제대로 살리고 있는 것을 하나 선택해 구내서점에 비치할 것이며, 이미 절판된 번역본은 복사본으로 만들어 학과 사무실에서 배포토록 한다.

3학년 2학기 영어통사론(201605) - (전공선택) 본 강좌는 영어 문장을 이해하고 생성하는 데 필요한 문법이 어떤 형태로 되어 있는가를 체계적으로 배우는 과정이다. 전통문법은 단편적인 문법사항들의 집합체인 것 같은 인상을 주는데 비해, 통사론은 그 단편적인 지식들이 어떤 관계를 가지고 서로 상호작용하여 무한한 영어문장을 이해하고 생성하는데 작용하는가를 이해하게 해준다. (이전의 통사론은 규칙을 도출할 때 무엇을 고려하는가를 중점으로 두었지만 이번 학기에는 규칙을 주고 적용하는 훈련을 할 얘정임.)

고급통번역(201607) - (전공선택) - 통번역의 기본적인 스킬을 연마하여 한 단계 업그레이드된 통번역 기술을 익힌다. - 통역의 delivery와 performance 향상을 도모한다. - 통번역사의 기본적인 자질을 습득한다.

19세기영미소설(201606) - (전공선택) 19세기는 영미뿐 아니라 서구 전반에 있어 소설문학의 전성기였고 그중에서도 가장 대표적 소설들과 자타가 공인하는 걸작들은 한결같이 비극적 소설(tragic novel)임을 고려할 때 기원전 5세기 희랍 고전시대의 삼대 비극작가들에 의해 처음 예술형태로 나타난 비극적 비전은 서양 문학사에서 중간의 2100년의 공백기를 거치고 르네상스 시대의 영국 최대의 작가인 셰익스피어에 의해 부활하였고 이는 또 잠시의 휴지기를 거쳐 19세기 후반에 다시금 화려하게 개화하였다는 것을 알아야 한다.. 단지 고전 희랍과 르네상스 비극은 드라마와 운문의 형식으로 되어 있으나 19세기 비극은 소설이라는 당대의 대표적 문학 형식으로 나타났다는 것이 다르다면 다를 뿐이다. 따라서 비극 전통을 따져올라가면 서양문학의 중심적 맥을 짚는 것이 된다. 이 과목은 처음 몇 시간 동안, 서양인의 특유한 세계관 및 인생관의 표현으로서의 비극적 비전과 이것의 예술적 형상화로서의 비극 문학을 구성하는 핵심적 내용과 특징을 소개하며, 이어서 남은 시간 동안 구체적으로 19세기의 영국 및 미국에서 가장 최초로 또한 가장 강력한 비극문학을 쓴 에밀리 브론테와 허먼 멜빌의 대표적 작품을 강독하기로 한다. 결론 시간에는 20세기의 비극문학의 전통을 잊는 작가들은 없는가 검토해 본다. 문학의 가장 근본적인 관심사인 비극적 인생관 및 동양문학과 비교할 때 가장 두드러진 서양문학의 특징을 알아보는 시간이 될 것이다.

영미문학의비평(201601) - (전공선택) This course takes as its basis the assumption that there has been an unignorable change in what counts as 'English Literature' in the twentieth century, a period of British imperial decline and national self-doubt. Students will not necessarily want to analyse what is, after all, a massively complex historical condition; but they will want to be able to identify, understand, and evaluate its cultural mediatiion in various forms of writing. The aim of this course is to foster an informed and critical awareness of this mediation.

4학년 1학기 미국학(201706) - (전공선택) Designed for high-intermediate and advanced students of English, the basic topic of the course is American culture. Students will begin by exploring the concept of culture and the relationship between language and culture. They will be introduced to traditional American values and explore how these values affect various institutions and aspects of life in the U.S. In addition, students will learn about cross-cultural conflict and adjustment as well as the significant differences in verbal and nonverbal communication found in American culture. Thus, each week will focus on a different topic related to American culture. Students are expected to prepare for class by completing any homework (2 written assignments for the semester) and thoroughly reading the assigned materials (11 reading assignments for the semester) before class—an average of 12-13 pages of reading per assignment (low is 7 pages and high is 22 pages for one week). The mode of instruction will include a variety of teaching methods including group and pair work as well as class discussions and mini-lectures. Multimedia resources such as web sites, movies, and songs/sound files will also be used in class. Although the students' reading and speaking skills will be emphasized, some practice of listening and writing will also occur. By the end of the course, students should have a deeper understanding of American culture as well as the concept of culture and should have developed the skills necessary to understand, respect, and accommodate other cultures different from their own.

영어발달사(201701) - (전공선택) 영어발달과정을 고대 이집트문자부터 시작하여 고대, 중세, 근대영어를 살펴보는 과목입니다. 영어이해및 관련된 사회, 문화들도 다룰 예정입니다.

현대영미소설(201702) - (전공선택) 이 강좌는 19세기 후반 및 20세기 초까지 이르는 현대영미소설의 중요한 두 작가 D.H.Lawrence와 Thomas Hardy의 소설세계를 개괄한다. 특히 Lawrence의 현대적 특성이 부각된 소설 Women in Love, Sons and Lovers와 Hardy의 The Return of the Native를 읽어가면서, 두 작가를 비교 대조하고 공통점 및 차이점을 살펴본다. 그리고 두 작가들이 소설속에 제기한 쟁점들이 어떻게 현대의 우리 생활에 기반이 되고 있는 가치관 및 세계관에 영향을 끼치고 있는가를 알아본다. 소설의 이해를 돕기 위해 소설을 영화화한 비디오를 감상하고 각종 프린트물을 제공한다.

세익스피어(201703) - (전공선택) This course studies three representative pieces of Shakespeare’s plays, analyzing the playwright’s stagecraft, his use of language and his reworking of historical materials. Although it consults some recent adaptations for stage and screen, it is particularly interested in the plays as produced in their original historical and cultural contexts. The course will thus familiarize students with Renaissance drama’s negotiation of contested social and political issues at the turn of the seventeenth century.

4학년 2학기 현대영미희곡(201801) - (전공선택) This course explores works of major British and American dramatists of the late 20th century with special focus on their thematic development concerning the theatre of the absurd. It seeks to provide students with an understanding of the interaction between cultural and social issues and theatre. The course will be conducted primarily through lectures and discussions, and film versions of the plays will be shown in order to supplement dramatic texts.

실무영어(201803) - (전공선택) 본 강좌는 졸업 후 취업을 위해 필요한 전반적 실무 영어 능력 함양을 목표로 한다. 우선 실제 업무에 필요한 영작문과 영어 말하기 능력을 배양하고, 자기소개서, 이력서, 업무용 서신이나 문서를 작성하는 방법과 효과적인 영어 발표 기법 등을 배운다. 이러한 강좌 목표를 위한 전략으로 다양한 sentence structures를 익히고 이를 활용하도록 한다.

영미시특강(201808) - (전공선택) 이 과목의 목표는 소위 모더니즘이라고 일컬어지는 문화현상이 현대시인들과 어떤 관계가 있는지를 점검하는데 있다. 현대시는 현대사회의 해체적 경향, 비합리적 특징을 보이고 있는 문화현상, 우주질서와 인간존재에 대한 근원적 재질문, 참고체계의(framework of referenc

고급영어회화(201807) - (전공선택) Advanced English Conversation section 2 is a writing-focused course. Thus, this section is different from section 1. Since this is the only writing-focused course in the department, this section is for intermediate to high-intermediate students of English. Students will practice writing while exploring various topics through reading. The main goal of the course is to improve students’ English writing and reading skills. Students are expected to prepare for class by completing their homework and thoroughly reading any assigned materials before class. Instruction will include a variety of teaching methods that include both writing and reading language skills. For evaluation, students will complete a weekly journal and homework and 2 longer writing assignments. There will be no midterm or final exam in this course. The 2 longer writing assignments will replace these 2 tests. Please note that writing time will be given in class as well. By the end of the course, the students should have made good progress in becoming better writers and readers in English by gaining a lot of valuable practice through the various writing and reading activities in the class.

영어학연습(201705) - (전공선택) In this course we are going to raise the questions of what phonology is in contrast to phonetics and how we can approach it, focusing on distinctive features, syllables, stress and intonation in English. In addition, this class attempts to help students write up what they learn in class.
